The 2012 Charities

All of the people we support in turn support local people and local needs. We cannot help them without you, so thank you for your generosity over the years, and we hope you will continue to support the Ball, and help us to help these incredibly worthwhile initiatives.

Young Dementia UK (Registered Charity No. 1085595)

The original name of the charity, The Clive Project, was a tribute to Clive and Helen Beaumont. The name change to YoungDementia UK is aimed at strengthening that tribute well into the future. Clive was in his mid-forties when his career as an Army officer suddenly nose-dived. He had difficulty communicating with his colleagues, and his written work became increasingly terse and inadequate. He was made redundant in 1992; he was 45 and his children were 3 and 4. He never worked again. After a fraught year of failed job applications and difficulties in coping at home, Clive was forced to look for a reason for his difficulties. Clive was diagnosed with early onset dementia in December 1993. Clive lost the ability to read and write. He couldn't read a bed-time story to his children. He lost his driving licence, but still cycled everywhere. Clive's difficulties got worse, and he started to get lost. One day he went for a walk, and was eventually found 20 hours later and 25 miles away. Helen could no longer look after him and the children; Clive had to be looked after elsewhere. The only place prepared to look after him was 50 miles from his young family. Clive was moved from nursing home to nursing home as his illness progressed, and his behaviour grew more challenging. He lost his speech entirely, but could still sing a few snatches of song. He never admitted defeat, and walked continuously, even when he started to walk into doors because he could no longer work out how to open them. Clive died in 1999. He was 51. The Charity now works with other people suffering with early onset dementia, with a view to supporting them through this difficult and debilitating illness.

Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary (Registered Charity No. 254642)

Oxford Animal Sanctuary is the local animal sanctuary at Stadhampton. The sanctuary provides care, housing and re-homing services for most kinds of  domestic animals including Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Guinea-Pigs and even Donkeys. At any one time, the sanctuary may be home to several hundred animals that have found themselves without a home, or who have been ill-treated. It relies entirely on donations to feed and care for these animals until they can be placed with new owners.

Chalgrove & Stadhampton First Responders

The Community First Responders are volunteer members of the public, trained by the Ambulance Service, who help members of their community by responding to medical emergencies before the arrival of an emergency ambulance. Because they are based in the communities themselves, they are often able to reach people and deliver vital first aid before the ambulance crew. All of their equipment, from high visibility jackets through to defibrillators, is purchased through donations by the public.

C.H.A.T.S.

C.H.A.T.S. is a local Chalgrove service that offers transportation to and from hospital for local residents that would otherwise be unable to travel. The service is run by volunteers and is funded entirely by donations from residents, and those using the service. Donations to C.H.A.T.S go towards fuel for the volunteers.

St. Mary's Church Restoration Fund

St. Mary's Church is a fine Grade 1 listed building dating from the 12th Century. It has a famous and almost complete set of medieval wall paintings covering the chancel walls (believed to have been painted around 1320). The church is set in a churchyard in which a number of old gravestones face south instead of eastwards as is customary, St Mary's Chalgrove reflects a long village life both interesting and different. Even today it enjoys a happy relationship with a flourishing church pub in the village, The Red Lion Inn, which is vested in the Trustees of the Church Estate.
